WORKMAN FAMILY HISTORY pages 16-27

AMERICANA

One of the early Workman families to come to America is that of ANTHONY WORKMAN and his wife ELIZABETH who arrived in the year 1668 with 47 other passengers aboard the "Francis and Mary" which had sailed from Bristol, England, under the command of Captain John England. As a reward for "services" Anthony and his wife were each awarded 50 acres of land on the Island of Kent. He bought another 50 acres creating a tract known as "Workman's Hazard," a very fertile and desirable piece of property.

It is probable that Anthony and Elizabeth had children although to date no such record has been found. However, before ten years had passed, Elizabeth died; and, if there were children, they left home as they reached maturity and were not again identified with the family. Anthony then married Mrs. JOHAN PORTER DUNN, the widow of Robert Dunn who, had come to Maryland in 1649.

In the year 1680, Captain England, sailing again from Bristol, Gloucester, England, this time in the ship "Society," brought a Workman to the American shores. This time it was Samuel who came to Pennsylvania. Samuel, however, died a bachelor having willed his meager possessions to his two nieces (will filed in Bristol Archives, England). There were other scattered migrations about this time and subsequently, but one stands out in importance above all others. 1H. JOHN WILLIAM WORKMAN (the Dutch form of his name being Jans William Woertman) died in Amsterdam, Holland, some time before the year 1647. Little is known of him except that he was married and had a family. It is believed that he was an emigrant from England, coming to Holland as a result of religious persecution during the time of the Puritan upheavals. In Holland, John seemingly integrated into the social and religious way of life of the people there and his family adopted their customs completely so that during the time of their emigrations they were known mainly as sons, daughters, or wife of John. In church records the patronymic pattern was followed almost completely so that John's son, Richard, is recorded as Dirck Jansen very frequently. As early as the year 1628, Jans William Woertman had married HARMTJE (Hannah, an unusual name among the Dutch) and they were the parents of at least three children born in Amsterdam, Holland:

2H. ELIZABETH JANS (or Woertman, dau of John) born about 1630. Her name is spelled variously in church records as Elizabeth, Lysbeth, Lysbet. Her first recorded appearance in America was 7 July 1647 when she married (1) PIETER JANSEN NOORMAN (born in Norway). Elizabeth and Pieter were among the first settlers of the town of Bushwick, having purchased 130 acres of land in that area, located on the East River. Elizabeth was living on and acquired title to this property at the time of her husband's death. She and her second husband made a joint will in 1688 giving the property to Teunis Woertman (son of her brother Dirck Jansen Woertman) in whose family it remained until 1785 and became known as the Woertman House.
Elizabeth married (2) 6 Oct. 1662 at New Amsterdam Dutch Church, JOOST JANSEN COCQUIT (Cockuit or Kokhuyt; bom at Brugge, Flanders, Belguini; recorded as emigrating from Wieringen 27 April 1660, as a soldier on the ship Otter). Elizabeth, as a widow, 10 March 1694/5 executed a codicil to the joint will, indicating that Joost died prior to that time. The will, proved 1 April 1695, made bequests to nephews and nieces indicating that Elizabeth died without issue.
*3H. DIRCK JANS WOERTMAN (Richard, John's son, Workman; it will be noted that the names Richard and John are common names in the Workman family of Gloucester, England, of this era) born about 1630 in Amsterdam, Holland; immigrated to America in 1647 and was unmarried at that time.
4H. ANNETJE, known most commonly as Annetje Lodowycke, may have been a half-sister to Dirck and Elizabeth, inasmuch as Lodowycke de Jong appeared as sponsor to the baptism of Annetje's first child. Proponents of this theory point out that the mother of the family, Harmitje, widow of Jans, probably married Lodowycke de Jong in Holland and he probably sponsored the family, Elizabeth and Dirck, children of the first marriage, and Annetje, his own daughter', in the move to America. It is fairly certain that the mother came to America, but in all land transactions she is known merely as Harmitje Jans, with L6,dowicke never appearing in the picture.. She lived to a ripe old age and owned considerable property in Long Island and Brooklyn and died after 1685. This would make Annetje born probably in 1636, half sister to the other two children. At her marriage in 1655, she names herself as "Annetje Loderwycks Van Amsterdam" (Annetje Loderwycks of Amsterdam) - It is also conceivable, and there is indication in the records, that she was a little older than assumed and she came to America as the widow or wife of Lodowyck de Jong. This would then make the Lodowyck. de Jong, sponsor of her first child, a nephew or other relative; or this could have been an attempt to name the father of the child of a previous marriage.
Annetje married 7 Aug. 1655 in New Amsterdam Dutch Church, SIMON CLAUSE (Claeszen Van (or of) Groeningen; his will, made 8 July 1684 and probated 7 Oct. 1684, indicated that Annetje had died before that time). They were residents of Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York. Their children, all christened in Brooklyn, Kings, N. Y. were: Grietje Clause chr 29 July 1657; Engeltye Clause chr 15 Sept. 1658; Janneken Clause chr 5 Dec. 1660; Clause Clause chr 27 Nov. 1661; Elizabeth Clause chr 22 May 1664; Lodewyck Clause chr 25 April 1666; Peter Clause chr 12 Jan. 1671; Margaret Clause chr 14 Jan. 1674; and Jan Clause. In the will of Simon Clause, he requests that the children he left in the guardianship of his wife's brother and brother-in-law, Derick Jans Woertman and Joost Kokhuyt; the estate to be divided between the children of "Annetje Derickson DeJong (Widow) that have the name of Clause." This is a strong indication that Annetje was married previously and had children by that tirst marriage with their christening taking place later, or they could have been omitted because of death or marriage. Only the last six are named in the will.
3H. DIRCK JANS WOERTMAN, son of John William Workman1; born about 1630 Amsterdam, Holland; immigrated to America in 1647 (the date fixed when in 1687 he took the oath of allegiance at Brooklyn and stated that he had been in the country 40 years). Although known during this period simply as Dirck (Derick) Jans, in 1680 he resumed the surname of Woertman and was known by it from then on. Just where he lived from 1647 to 1661 is not certain, but on 10 April 1661 he and his wife, MARRIETJE TEUNIS DENYSE (born 3 April 1644,'Brooklyn, Kings, New York; died 1690 Brooklyn, N.Y.; dau of Teunice Nyssen and Femmetje (Phoebe) Seals) were admitted to the Brooklyn Dutch Church. Just when the couple was married is not known, but it was probably in 1660. At this time and subsequently Dirck, (Derick) owned property in Brooklyn and operated the Brooklyn Ferry. The sale of this took place in 1687., Dirck was made a town officer in 1673 in Brooklyn. The children of this family were:,

The first move westward into the American hinterland began early for the Woertman's of New York. As early as 1650, a Dutch explorer, Cornelius Van Tunhover, had returned to the New York area to tell of a valley where the fattest deer roamed and 60-pound turkeys could be had for the shooting. This land, he said, was the pleasantest and handsomest place a man had ever seen. Huge pines, oaks, chestnut and hickory trees grew there, and a glistening river meandered through meadows and fields of corn. Not too long after this, negotiations began between the Dutch and the Raritan Indians; and, by the 6th of Dec. 1651, Augustine Hermanon had received a grant of almost all the entire northern half of what is. now Somerset County-granted to him by the Raritan Indians.

Among the early settlers of this beautiful valley was Jan Derick Woertman (Wortman) 7H who, with his , family, came from Brooklyn Heights, New York, in the year 1699, his daughter Elizabeth being christened in Somerville in September of that, year. By the year 1704 he removed to the village of Raritan where he remained for a number of years, moving from there with grown 'children to Pluckemin. Here he erected a long old-fashioned house made of logs that was to be known for many years as the Workman Homestead. Here a descendant, Jan Wortman, known as Squire Wortman (no, doubt because of his vast estate of 500 acres) entertained the patriots, Gisbert Sutphen (see Catherine Wortman 57H) , Aaron Melick, and Colonel Stephen Hunt when they met to plan their resistance to the British army a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed. It was here too that Jan Wortman ' trained by his father in the family trade as a blacksmith, shod the horses of George Washington and his entourage during the Revolutionary War. Some nights John and his helpers worked all through the night repairing the carriages and shoeing the horses, so they would be ready for the General the next morning.

The Woertman tradition in America had been one of civic loyalty. Derick Jans3H had begun it in 1673 when he became an officer of his town in Brooklyn. Jan Derick continued it as Justice of the Peace in New Jersey; Squire Jan Wortman, his nephews and sons planned and worked for the revolutionary forces and from Somerset County Peter13H and Andrew Wortman 52 joined the Militia. In a neighboring state from the county of Washington, Maryland, other Workman sons, whose record follows, on the 28th day of August 1776 joined the service declaring themselves, Isaac Workman, Stephen Workman, Joseph Workman Jacob Workman, John Workman, and Andrew Workman, to be for the cause of liberty.

Remaining in Maryland, Isaac, John, Andrew, Stephen, and Joseph also took the oath of Fidelity to. the state of Maryland, listing themselves under the company of Andrew Bruce from Washington County. In the years 1788 and 1789 men of known service during the Revolution were given the chance to acquire 50 acres of land each. Among those so rewarded were John Workman, Isaac Workman, William Workman Andrew Workman, Jacob Workman,. Stephen Workman, John Wyckoff, and Samuel Wyckoff. It was at this time that Washington County was divided and Allegany County came into being with Cumberland as the county seat.

It will be noted that Joseph did not receive land in Maryland for his military service. It is believed that he and his family removed before this time to become the first settlers of Boone County, West Virginia. The foregoing is the result of the research of Mrs. Lydia W. Billings.
